One BIg Flaw August 25, 2010 China Blue I love this case but the video light and camera flash is unusable due to reflected light coming off of the edge of the case. It bounces light back into the camera lens degrading the picture quality.
Still the best case for my needs August 19, 2010 Mort I owned a Speck CandyShell case for my iPhone 3G and was very happy with it, so I figured I'd do the same for the iPhone 4.
I'm pleased with this case as well, save for the one nag that's appearing to be a common theme here.
As with the previous CandySHell cases, this case is sturdy and feels nice and solid. This may just be my personal taste, but I actually like that it adds just a bit of weight and bulk to the phone, emphasizing the sturdy feel of the phone and case combined. This case is also very comfortable to hold in hand, with smoothed edges. It provides great protection against drops/shock with its 2 layers. It's pretty easy to slip your phone into it, and it's molded perfectly, tho it can be a little tricky to get the phone out.
Really my only gripe is with the issue of the led flash. My experience with it is not nearly as bad as have been posted here before. My pictures come out nearly perfectly, save for a small semicircle in the bottom left of the picture that is slightly brighter than the rest of the picture. I find it to be so minor, that I wouldn't hesitate to take my photos with this minute blemish. I should note that I've only had this case for a week so I'm not sure if this is the redesigned case or not.
IMHO, this Speck had yet again delivered the best iPhone case for my money, and the only reason I docked one star was for the minor issue with the flash. Beyond that, this case is awesome, and I would easily recommend it to anyone.
Protective but not perfect August 18, 2010 Jeffrey R. Brant (Cartersville, GA USA) This case fits well and seems like it should offer a fair amount of protection to the iPhone 4. However, it has its downsides. The glossy piano-black finish is a fingerprint magnet and it developed micro-scratches on the back surface just from placing the phone down on smooth surfaces after just a couple of weeks of use. I wish the finish was more "grippy" than it is. The good thing is it allows the phone to easily slide and out of my shirt pocket without attracting lint.
I cannot comment on the protection this case provides because I have not dropped the phone so far. (I have gone YEARS without dropping a smart phone, as I tend to treat them with care.)
The phone's buttons are well-protected by rubber caps that are easy to press. I have had no problems connecting the phone's USB cord (original equipment) with the case in place, but have not tried connecting to any iPhone docks.
I like the way this case has a ridge that protrudes past the front surface to protect the screen if the phone is placed face-down on a surface.
Lastly, I have the same problem as others when using the LED flash. It creates horrible glare on photos. I will call Speck Products to see if they will replace my case with the new design when it becomes available, as others have mentioned here.
The case does add somewhat to the size and weight of the phone, but not too badly. If this case came in a matte finish that wan't quite as slippery, I would give it a higher rating.
Favorite case so far! August 12, 2010 Navarro L. Parker (San Diego, CA United States) The Candyshell was my favorite case for my 3GS, so I was very excited to learn that there would be an iPhone 4. You get a hard plastic outside with a shock absorbing silicone inside. The bottom sync port is a little narrow with Griffin car chargers, but it works just fine with the Apple cable. I just really like how the Candyshells feel in my hand. The hard plastic makes it easy to slip into pants. The silicone gives it shock absorption. I've tried seven other iP4 cases, and this is hands-down my favorite.
Good but not great. August 11, 2010 Arturo R. Kayser (MIA, FL) Since most of the talking points have already been touched upon in earlier reviews, I'll keep mine short and sweet.
Pros:
- Feels very solid
- Perfect fitment
- Good access to phone controls
- Easy in/out of pockets
- Looks like it should provide good protection
Cons:
- Too bulky for my taste
- Won't work with most pin connectors/adaptors
- Won't fit any of my docks
- Has the "camera haze" issue
- Scratches WAY WAY too easily (even if you look at it wrong)
- A bit heavy
Overall, the case is very solid, but the bulkiness, connector incompatability, and ease of damage were dealbreakers. So far, my favorite iPhone 4 case is the Incipio Silicrylic. I will try the Speck Pixelskin HD and Incipio NGP next.
